Photo ID
If you want to go to your local polling station to place your vote then, under the current rules, you will need a valid form of Photo ID.
This requirement was introduced in 2023 by the Tory government under the pretence that they were trying to reduce voter fraud, even though this type of fraud is almost non-existent. The result – whether accidental or intentional – has been to make it significantly more difficult for some members of the public to vote.
The Labour Government will introduce an elections and democracy bill in the current parliament which will allow for other forms of proof of identity such as a bank card. This will make the requirement more democratic and easier to meet.
Meanwhile, don’t let yourself be deprived of the chance to vote. First, check the rules about what form of Photo ID is valid by clicking on the link to go to the government website and find out.
