South Suffolk Labour is backing a proposal for three unitary councils to take over local government in the county.
The county, borough and district councils in Suffolk are being replaced in order to make local government more effective and responsive to local needs.
The proposal for three unitary councils was developed jointly by all five District and Borough Councils in Suffolk. It will go to the Government for approval at the end of September.
South Suffolk Constituency Labour Party believes it offers the best outcome for the people of Suffolk by providing coordinated services across three new councils while retaining local responsiveness and accountability and achieving significant cost savings.
This is in stark contrast to the proposal put forward by the Conservative dominated County Council for one mammoth unitary council covering the whole of Suffolk which would be leave most of the population out of touch with local government.
